He left school at the end of Year 11 when he was 17 without a job to go to because, as he puts it, “I was just focused on footy and little else”. The recent cold snap across parts of the country has seen the Barrington Tops area blanketed in snow, drawing hundreds of sightseers. The region, west of Gloucester in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, is the highest subalpine area in the country, outside the Australian Alps.

Keen snow chasers headed up to the Tops overnight, with snow reportedly falling on Saturday, Sunday and another dusting in the early hours of Monday morning. Snow has been falling in areas above 1100 metres, with those on the ground reporting several centimetres in some locations. The Orwin family from Budgewoi packed up the caravan and headed to Polblue campground for the weekend, awaiting the snow.

But screen and media diploma students at Newcastle TAFE have found it enjoyable. The 10 students in this year’s course will show how well it can be done in The Ties That Bind, a program of short plays and films that will be presented at the Civic Playhouse nightly from Thursday to Saturday at 7.30pm. Each student has contributed a play and film to the show, which has free admission. And the team members, aged 18 to 29, also appear in multiple works.
